When I first got into Toronto’s Twitter social scene 3 years ago, Lou Dawg’s was a staple for late night eats. Co-owner and Ryerson Professor Daryl D’Souza has always been a welcoming sight when I’ve stopped in. I truly don’t know how he manages to co-run 2 restaurants and teach Marketing as well. Nowadays I find myself at the newer Ryerson location more often. However, the first location was celebrating their 5th anniversary and I stopped in to check out a few new items as part of their “Big Dawg Menu.” Pulled Pork Tacos I got the ball rolling with these Tacos. The Pulled Pork, Black Bean Corn Salad, and BBQ Mayo fused perfectly together. I could eat Crispy Onions by the ton as well. Unfortunately there were two glaring issues. The first is that this was very messy. As soon as I lifted the Taco, it was dripping all over the place so be careful. The latter issue was the Tortilla itself. It was way too dry. Everything inside was tender, moist, and full of flavour but that Tortilla wasn’t working for me. Big Dawg Pork Slider This was very much like the Pulled Pork Tacos except everything fused together. The addition of sliced Jalapenos also took this up a notch. Where the Tortilla was dry, this bread held everything together and complimented all the other ingredients. I could eat a few of these and be happily KO’d. The Triple B Slider This was the winner of the night for me. A Pulled Pork Slider with BBQ Mayo, Beans, and Bacon. The flavours were about what you’d expect but it was the odd texture combination of Beans and Bacon that took this up a notch. It was all so smooth and then you’d get the crunch and Salt from some of the Bacon. Everyone at our table thought this was a Home Run. Angry Loutine I’m going to leave the jury out on this for one reason. When you put a bunch of Food Bloggers together, they have a habit of taking photos rather than eating their hot dish. In this case, 3 bloggers and 1 very helpful friend (you my boy Rob), snapped a lot of photos as the light was becoming scarce in the evening. When we finally dug in, the Angry Loutine had gone a bit limp. It’s entirely on me for not digging in sooner. The components (Cheese, Jalapenos, Pulled Pork, BBQ Mayo, Crispy Onions) are everything that I look for. It was just too little too late for me. I’ll be back specifically to try this dish. These were the new additions as part of the Big Dawg Menu. Unfortunately I missed out on the Beef Crunch Wrap and Fish Tacos. We also had a few Lou Dawg’s staples
Lots of deliciousness crossed my path. I see a Triple B Sandwich and an Angry Loutine (with extra Jalapenos) in my future. Great meeting Mary, Rob and Amanda last night. Lots of laughs and good food is an ideal combination. Lou Dawgs “Big Dawg Menu” is now rolled out so pop in and give it a shot for yourself
